Description
James Longstreet was born in 1821 in South Carolina and forged into one of the Confederacy’s most steadfast and capable commanders through a lifetime of hard service. A West Point graduate who distinguished himself with quiet bravery in the Mexican-American War, he entered the Civil War as a seasoned professional whose calm judgment and iron reliability quickly earned him the trust of Robert E. Lee. Nicknamed “Lee’s Old War Horse,” Longstreet rose to command the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, where his talent for defensive warfare and crushing counterattacks made him indispensable on every major battlefield from the Peninsula to Chickamauga.
At Second Manassas, Antietam, and Fredericksburg he held the line with granite resolve; at Chickamauga he delivered the decisive breakthrough that routed a Union army. Even when his advice was overruled, Longstreet fought with unflinching loyalty and personal courage, sharing every hardship of his men. After the war he chose the harder path of reconciliation, urging Southerners to accept the outcome and rebuild the nation. Through decades of public service and private integrity, Longstreet remained the embodiment of the professional soldier’s highest virtues: duty, steadfastness, and an unbreakable sense of honor.
