Description

James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart was born in 1833 in the rolling hills of Virginia and grew into the very embodiment of the romantic cavalryman—bold, brilliant, and unbreakable. A West Point graduate who first tasted combat on the Western frontier, he brought to the Confederate cause a rare combination of daring, horsemanship, and instinctive tactical genius. From the moment he took command of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, Stuart became Lee’s eyes and sword, screening the army, gathering intelligence with uncanny skill, and striking deep into enemy territory with a flair that lifted Southern hearts.

His legendary rides around McClellan’s army in 1862 made him a national hero, while his thunderous charges at Brandy Station, Gettysburg, and countless lesser fields proved that no Federal horseman could match his speed or ferocity. Even when outnumbered, Stuart fought with laughing courage and iron resolve, inspiring his troopers to follow him into the thickest fire. Mortally wounded at Yellow Tavern in 1864 while defending Richmond, he died as he had lived—at the head of his men, still urging them forward. In life and in death, Jeb Stuart remained the shining knight of the Confederacy, a warrior whose name still evokes the thunder of hooves and the glint of sabers in the sun.
