Description

Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was born in 1824 in the mountains of western Virginia and rose from orphaned poverty to become one of the most brilliant and fearsome commanders in American military history. A stern, deeply religious graduate of West Point, he first proved his courage in the Mexican-American War, then spent a decade as a quiet, eccentric professor at the Virginia Military Institute. When war came, Jackson answered the call of his native state with the same iron sense of duty that defined his life, turning raw volunteers into a fighting force that moved with the speed and shock of a thunderbolt.

At First Manassas he earned his immortal nickname when he stood “like a stone wall” against the Federal onslaught, rallying a collapsing line and helping turn defeat into victory. In the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 he achieved the impossible: with a small army he outmarched, outfought, and outwitted three Union forces twice his size, tying down tens of thousands of enemy troops and becoming a legend of strategic genius. As Lee’s trusted corps commander he struck with relentless aggression at Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville—where his final, masterful flanking march shattered the Union right before he fell to friendly fire. Even in death, Jackson remained the embodiment of unyielding faith, discipline, and martial brilliance.
