Thomas Jefferson, principal author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, helped define what it meant for Americans to form a distinct nation. He viewed the United States not merely as a collection of states but as a people united by shared principles of liberty, self-government, and republican virtue—distinct from the monarchies and corruptions of Europe. “The first object of my heart is my own country,” he declared, placing American independence and character at the center of his thought.

Jefferson’s nationalism was cultural and ideological as much as political. He believed America uniquely embodied Enlightenment ideals of natural rights and consent of the governed, creating an “Empire of Liberty” that could expand westward while remaining a model for free peoples. His Louisiana Purchase dramatically enlarged the nation’s territory, and his First Inaugural Address sought national unity with the famous call: “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.” He defended American commerce and sovereignty (including against the Barbary pirates) while cautioning against permanent foreign entanglements that might compromise the republic’s character.

Though he favored limited federal power in domestic affairs and strong state and local self-government as safeguards for liberty, Jefferson consistently prioritized the American nation’s survival, cohesion, and distinct identity. He narrated an “American Story” of a people capable of realizing universal principles that other nations could only aspire to.
