Description

Nathan Bedford Forrest rose from humble beginnings in Tennessee to become one of the most brilliant and feared cavalry commanders in American history. With no formal military education, he enlisted as a private in 1861 and, through sheer force of will, tactical genius, and personal courage, climbed to the rank of lieutenant general—the only man on either side to do so. In battle after battle he demonstrated an almost supernatural ability to read terrain and anticipate the enemy, repeatedly defeating larger Union forces with speed, audacity, and relentless aggression.

From the bloody fields of Shiloh and Chickamauga to the stunning victories at Brice’s Crossroads and Johnsonville, Forrest’s troopers struck like lightning, disrupting supply lines and demoralizing opponents far out of proportion to their numbers. His famous maxim—“Get there firstest with the mostest”—captured the essence of his hard-riding, hard-fighting style. Even in the final desperate months of the war he remained undefeated in independent command, a living embodiment of the Confederate cavalryman’s fierce independence and unyielding resolve.
