By the mid-1930s, Spain teetered on the edge of collapse. The Second Republic, born with high ideals, had fractured into warring factions — anarchists, communists, socialists, and separatists clashing violently with monarchists, conservatives, and the Church. Political assassinations were common. Churches burned. Strikes paralyzed cities. To many Spaniards watching their country slide toward what looked like Bolshevik-style revolution, the state seemed to have lost its ability to govern at all.

Into this vacuum stepped Francisco Franco, a career military officer who had risen through discipline and battlefield competence in Spain’s African campaigns. When the National uprising began in 1936, Franco emerged as its leading general and, within a year, its unifying head of state. For his supporters, what followed the Nationalist victory in 1939 was not merely a military triumph but the reimposition of order on a nation that had been ungovernable.

Franco’s decades in power were an era of stability: political violence of the revolutionary kind ended, a rigid hierarchy replaced factional chaos, and from the 1960s onward Spain experienced the “Spanish Miracle” — rapid industrial growth, rising living standards, and the beginnings of a tourism economy that opened the country to the world. Franco cast himself as a unifying father figure, “Caudillo by the Grace of God,” who had saved Catholic, traditional Spain from a Communist revolution.
