For nearly two centuries, this banner has carried the cause of traditional Spain — a Spain rooted in Catholic faith, regional fueros (local rights and liberties), and loyalty to a legitimate king who ruled in partnership with, not above, his people. Carlists trace their movement to the 1830s, when they rallied behind Don Carlos against a centralizing liberal state they saw as severing Spain from its historic soul.

The Sacred Heart at the flag’s center is no accident: Carlism cast itself as a defense of Catholic Spain against secularism, and of the old regional liberties of Navarre, the Basque Country, and Catalonia against a leveling central government. Three Carlist Wars were fought across the 19th century in the name of this vision — a Spain of covenant and custom rather than bureaucratic uniformity.
