On the night before he faced Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge, Constantine slept uneasily among the campfires of an army that still carried the old gods on its standards. In the dark he was told to mark his men with a heavenly sign, the cipher of Christ: the Greek letters Chi and Rho locked together. At first light he summoned his officers and had the monogram painted on the shields, a white ☧ against battered bronze and painted wood. Many soldiers crossed themselves as the paint dried.

When the columns moved toward the Tiber, the new mark rode at the front of every rank. The river mist burned off, and Maxentius’s host came on from the city. Constantine’s men locked those marked shields, the labarum rising above them like a spear made into a cross, and they went forward. By afternoon the bridge was a wreck of men and horses, Maxentius was in the water, and the army that entered Rome did so under a sign none of the old eagles had ever worn. Constantine would later say the victory had been given to him in that mark. They had painted it on, and they had won.
