Robert Edward Lee was born into one of Virginia’s most distinguished families in 1807 and rose to become one of the most brilliant military minds America has ever produced. A graduate of West Point who served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, he earned a reputation for courage, engineering genius, and quiet integrity long before the Civil War. When his home state of Virginia seceded, Lee—then offered command of the entire Union army—chose instead the agonizing path of duty to his native soil, declaring that he could not raise his sword against his own people.

As commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee repeatedly outmaneuvered larger Union forces through daring strategy, iron discipline, and personal example under fire. From the Seven Days to Chancellorsville and the desperate defense of Petersburg, he held the Confederacy together far longer than any sober calculation of numbers would have allowed, becoming a living symbol of Southern resolve. After Appomattox he urged reconciliation, accepted the outcome with dignity, and spent his final years as president of Washington College, teaching young men the virtues of honor, restraint, and service to a reunited nation.
